14th convocation

The 14th convocation of SRMIST took place today 1st December 2018 at Dr. T.P Ganesan Auditorium, Kattankulathur campus. It was a moment of collective pride and happiness to every student and their respective parents. Beaming faces of students in their convocation robes, posing with their parents brought about a strong sense of achievement in the air.

The convocation function started at 11.00am with the invocation song (Tamil Thai Vaazhthu) after which the Chancellor Dr. T.R. Paarivendar welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr. V.K Saraswat, the Doctorate of Science Awardee Dr. Mohan Rajan, Chairman & Medical Director and Founder of Rajan Eye Care Hospital, the visiting dignitaries and the sea of students who had congregated to receive their prestigious degrees and doctorates.

The Chancellor, in his welcome address discussed about SRMIST’s growth as an institution and the various achievements in its last year which included being awarded the A++ ranking by NAAC, categorised as a Category ‘A’ institution of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), A Category I University according to section 12B of the UGC and given a Diamond Rating by QS I-GAUGE Indian College & University Rating. He also highlighted upon the fact that over 150 MoUs were signed with other foreign universities worldwide and mentioned the still orbiting functioning SRMSAT which is stable and still provides information about the weather.

The Chancellor called the students the “Best Ambassadors” of SRMIST as they step out with their hard-earned degrees. He also graciously mentioned that education fees and tuition fees of students hailing from the Gaja storm hit districts of Tamilnadu have been waived, resulting in the waiver of the tuition fees of over 650 students to a tune of rupees 48 crores, with this note he wrapped up his welcome address.

Dr. Sandeep Sancheti, Vice Chancellor of SRM IST welcomed all the potential graduands and presented SRMIST’s annual report. He also mentioned that this report would be published on the web for the entire world to see. He had presented the long list of achievements that SRMIST had crossed as an institution, some of them including but not restricted to its infrastructure such as 10 million sq. ft. of built-up area spread around 215+ acres of land, possessing one of the biggest libraries in the city equipped with the latest technology, an eco-friendly campus with more than 30% of greenery. In his speech, he mentioned that SRMIST has churned over 500+ graduates who received their doctorates with over 90+ graduands awaiting graduation this year alone. He also took the time to mention about the Jal-Janak project that SRMIST is involved with the Indian Railways to produce India’s first Hydrogen Fuel Powered Train.

Dr. Mohan Rajan – Chairman and Medical Director, Rajan Eye Care Hospital and the honoris causa of the occasion was conferred with the Doctor of Science degree by our Chief Guest Dr. V.K Saraswat. He experienced his elation by reminding what great privileges were bestowed to our students to become graduates from such a fantastic educational institution, he also praised the Chancellor calling him as a visionary and a person doing great service to education. Following this he brought about the statistics of visual impairment in India with 25% of the population being blind, 25% visually challenged and he also related the sorry state of the country with over 25% of the world’s blind children being Indian by nationality. He added the fact that India would soon take the first place for patients infected with diabetes-related retina problems. His appeal to the students was that such great diseases and defects can only be eradicated from the country with the combined effort of technology and medicine. He advised the graduands to study further and do service to our great nation.

The chief guest of the occasion Dr. V.K Saraswat, who is a pioneer in the field of missile systems, former Chairman of DRDO and presently the member of Niti Aayog, the planning commission of India, had quoted the words of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, Shri Narendra Modi and many other great pioneers that led India to its present state of development.

Apart from which Dr. V.K Saraswat had his own points to stress such as the empowering usage of mobile internet and its possible ability to bring quality healthcare to remote corners of the country, he also mentioned that as we speak over 30 people are migrating to urban areas in search of work and he also claimed that futurologists have predicted that by 2050 India would be 50% urbanised. He also presented the statement that contrary to Artificial Intelligence robbing people off their jobs and livelihood. AI and automation are important tools that would only pave the way to development and ultimately better jobs and livelihood conditions. His main plea to the graduands was to get any invention and innovation out of the laboratory as quickly as possible and bring it to the open market consequently creating a wider acceptance and immediate implementation to better the lives of the public.

Following the above events, the Chancellor and the chief guest Dr. V.K Saraswat took turns to present the degrees to the Ph.D and B.Tech graduate rank holders. The ceremony drew to a close with the National Anthem.
