Prof. Mohan Kameshwaran is a living authority in the field of Otorhinolaryngology. A Padma Shri recipient, his contributions to science and society alike has shown how much impact a man with the intention to serve can create within a society like that of India. Born in a family in Tamil Nadu, he was a graduate of Madras Medical College in the year 1976 following which his continuing education saw him as a graduate from Institute of Otorhinolaryngology, Chennai. He is also currently a fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh
A personified example of a good Samaritan and humanitarian, Prof. Mohan Kameshwaran has a proud service record of more than three decades spent in aiding and assistance of hundreds of thousands of individuals from the poorer and less endowed sections of the society. His service towards his field of study and the work extended by him in developing the community are crowning achievements of this person who, contrary to popular belief is humble enough to dedicate all his achievements in healing the sick to god rather than himself
Consequent to his thirst for knowledge and serving the society Prof. Mohan Kameshwaran is a field leading pioneer in many verticals. Apart from dedicating his life to healing the society from its Ear, Nose and Throat related issue, He is a pioneering Cochlear Implant Surgeon in South Asia and has one of the largest series in the world and he was also the first surgeon in Asia Pacific region to have performed the Paediatric Auditory Brainstem Implant. Speaking of innovation, he is credited to have used lasers in the field of otorhinolaryngology – A rare achievement in the field.
A mentor par excellence, he has imparted priceless knowledge and wisdom which has consequently spread to over forty cochlear implant centres all over countries like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Africa. In his mentoring wake, he has also educated hundreds of dedicated professionals in this field of medicine. Another great achievement that he has managed to do is to don the role of visiting professor to various universities all around the world including the Royal Society of Medicine, London, National University of Malaysia and The University of Kentucky, USA. Currently he is helping Edge Hill University, UK which benefits from his expertise in the specialised field of Otorhinolaryngology
Being a personality that has influenced mankind and medicine to this extent, it is only normal that awards and accolades come seeking his name He is currently the Regional Secretary of the International Federation of Otolaryngological Societies (IFOS) – the Apex body of ENT Surgeons in the world, representing Asia and of Governing Body of the prestigious Politzer Society. Furthermore, Prof. Mohan Kameswaran is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Awards that bear his name include the International Humanitarian Award of the American Academy of ENT Surgeons – the highest award conferred on a Non-American Surgeon by the Academy. He has also been awarded The National Award for Excellence of Service’ by the President of Sri Lanka, Indo-Australian Award and Tamil Nadu Scientist Award. In recognition of his outstanding contribution as an ENT Specialist, Government of India conferred upon him Padmashri Award in 2006 and Dr. B.C.Roy Award in 2008.
