Serving the Community...
There are many opportunities at SRM University for students to engage in service to the community - through healthcare camps, blood donation, advocacy campaigns or working with schools for the underprivileged.
Students are encouraged to take up community service through NSS or join any of the community service projects, to give back to the community.
National Social Service (NSS)
The NSS unit at SRM University has more than 1000 registered students. Prof L.R Ganapathi Subramaniam, School of Mechanical Engineering is the Programme Co-ordinator.
The NSS volunteers at SRM are involved in a wide spectrum of activities such as
- Social service - the community around the campus
- Cleaning the SRM university campus
- Planting trees
- Conducting health camps in rural areas
- Organizing blood donation camps
- Advocacy on community health
- Creating AIDs awareness, helping NGOs to raise sponsorship and funds
- Working with tsunami victims in rehabilitation etc.
The NSS unit also adopts government schools in Chengelpet district and works closely with the school authorities and students.
National Cadet Corps
The objective of National Cadet Corps is to develop character, comradeship, and capacity for leadership among youth in India. NCC at SRM motivates the students with best training and the ideals of selfless service. The training inculcates team spirit, a sense of nationalism and it also helps in developing the overall personality of an individual. The SRM NCC (Senior Division-SD) under 1 (Tamilnadu) Signal Company NCC [1 (TN) SIG COY NCC] was started in August 1996. The first and the second year students are enrolled for the duration of three years. We also enroll girls in the NCC since 2005 and the total allotted strength including girls is 83. The Obstacle Area was established in the year 2009 to train the cadets. NCC parades are regularly conducted in Dr. T. P. Ganesan Auditorium Ground on every Saturday from 7.00 to 11.00 AM as per Parade Schedule. Pre-parade meeting is also conducted in front of the NCC Office on every Friday from 4.30 to 5.30 PM
The NCC cadets actively participate in the Independence Day and Republic Day celebration in the campus. Annual Training Camp, Republic Day Camp (RDC - New Delhi), Inter Group Competitions (IGC), National Integration Camp (NIC) and special camps like Trekking Camp, Firing Camp are held periodically. The NCC cadets also get the opportunity to visit various countries like Singapore, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Maldives and Taiwan through Youth Exchange Program (YEP) to represent our country. SRM NCC cadets also organize social service events like Anti - Drug Rally, Blood Donation Camp, Anti - Plastic Rally, visiting orphanages and old age homes and creating awareness among the public regarding Consumer Awareness, Cancer & AIDS awareness, etc. The Cadets are encouraged to complete "B" and "C" certificate examinations and to join in Defense Services like Army, Navy and Airforce.
The NCC unit at SRM University functioning under the guidance of Associate NCC Officer - Lt N. Thangadurai, Assistant Professor, Department of Telecommunication Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology who has completed the Direct Commission Refresher Course which is conducted for NCC officers in Officer Training Academy, Kamptee during July 4, 2011 to September 17, 2011 with "A" grade.
