An optometrist is an independent primary health care provider who does comprehensive eye examination, diagnoses and management of diseases and disorders of the visual/ocular system. The types of treatment offered by optometrists are prescribing glasses, contact lenses and low vision aids, binocular vision therapy/ treatment, and rehabilitation of the visually impaired.

Educational Requirements for a Career in Optometry

  • It takes four years to complete bachelor's program (Bachelor of Clinical Optometry - B. Optom) in optometry and to become an Optometrist.
  • The first two years focus on classroom and laboratory work in the basic sciences, with emphasis on human anatomy and physiology, visual anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, ocular diseases, and geometric and ophthalmic optics.
  • The third year focuses on didactic lectures and practical training in specialties like contact lens, low vision, pediatric, and binocular vision clinic.
  • Interaction with patients (clinics) begins in the second year. Fourth-year students are involved in full-time patient care. In the due course of time students develop primary care diagnostic and management skills under the supervision of faculty members.


Career Opportunities

The scope of optometric practice is great, as there is a huge demand for optometrist both in India and abroad. Optometrists can set up their own private practice and work independently. Optometrist can work as consultants in eye hospitals, occupational/industrial safety programs, and manufacturers of ophthalmic products and can also choose a career in the public health, sports vision, and government service or community health centers. Optometrist can involve in research and specialize as vision scientist. Higher education like M.S, M.Phil, Ph.D or OD (Doctor of Optometry) degree can be pursued after completion of Bachelors in Optometry. The initial monthly income of an optometrist ranges from Rs.20,000 to Rs.40,000.
