The team of six students from SRM School of Management participated and won SIFE 2012 regional level competition in Chennai. They presented two projects- Tribal Eco tourism and Fresh O fresh organic farming under the guidance of Professor V M Ponniah and Assistant professor Priya Xavier.
Few students from the school of management had gone along with the faculty advisor Ms Priya Xavier to Yelagiri hills and met the tribals there. A need assessment was done and it was found that the tribes were in need of a steady source of income. So the SIFE SRM team came up with eco tourism as a way of bringing the tribals out of poverty. SIFE SRM spoke with the manager of YMCA in Yelagiri and entered into a tie up with YMCA to help the tribes run the eco tourism package.
The tribals could get tourists coming to YMCA as customers for their eco tourism package. Tribals were physically strong, artistic and close to nature. This helped them in introducing Trekking, Boating, Bird Watch, Village tour, Breakfast and para gliding as part of their eco tourism package. As the tribals were good in landscaping, they got orders in YMCA and boat lake area to do landscaping.
In the next project the SRM students did organic farming in 15 households at Perungalathur. The students taught the families the basics of organic farming and the benefits of it. They helped the families to grow ladies finger, brinjal and tomato. This was done to offset the rise in price of vegetables and to fulfill the desire of quality home grown vegetables. After winning the regional, SRM students went to Mumbai and presented their projects in the national level competition.
