TheFourth national workshop on Advances in Positioning, Navigation and Communication was organized by Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Kattankulathur, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) during August 17-18, 2017. The workshop was conducted in association with IET, The Institution of Engineering and Technology and IEEE SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) Student chapter. The two-day workshop was planned with seven technical sessions delivered by eminent academicians and industry personnel from various institutes. A total of forty-seven participants registered for the workshop including faculty members and student community.
About the workshop:
Localization is touching every aspect of our everyday life. Location-based services are featured in widely used applications in cellular communication- emergency services, weather forecast delivery, social networking, targeted advertising, navigation, are just a few. Not only cellular- positioning/location technologies are dominant in virtually all wireless networks deployments for a myriad of commercial, industrial, governmental and military uses. Although mobile position aware systems, combined with modern wireless technologies are becoming increasingly present in daily life, there are still technological obstacles and challenges in finding accurate location and tracking information. This workshop was devoted to recent advances in positioning, navigation and communications, as well as current state of the art in techniques and systems.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.S.R.Ramanan, Director (Retd.), Indian Meteorological Division, Chennai. He gave a talk on the topic Cyclone Forecasting in the Indian Subcontinent and disaster management. We had an interactive session with the participants discussing various experiences in his career as a meteorologist. He shared his experience during his last year of work when floods drowned Chennai.
Modernization of GNSS was covered by Dr Sridevi Jade, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modeling & Computer Simulation, Bengaluru, India.GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System and is the standard generic term for satellite navigation systems that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. The various applications behind GNSS for navigation were discussed by Dr Sridevi Jade. She shared her experience in CSIR fourth paradigm institute and gave insight for setting up labs in our premises.
The third session started with a brief introduction about Shri.K.V.S.Bhaskar, Project Director, Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems, Indian Space Research Organization, Bengaluru, India. He gave an in-depth talk about the Space Craft Configuration and design for navigational satellites. He also encouraged the participants to take up internships and visit ISRO in order to grab practical knowledge on Satellite navigation systems.
Mr. Ragav Ramachandran, Research Scholar, Laboratory for Waves & Complex Media, University of Le Havre, France gave a talk on Planetary& Deep Space Communication Techniques. The demands placed on deep space communications systems are continuously increasing. Without a consistently effective and efficient communications system, a successful mission would be impossible.
The second day began with the talk on the importance of Georeferencing by Mr.VigneshMurugesan, Research Scholar, Department of Sociology, Indian Institute of Technology,Indore. TheKalmanus societal applications behind Geo referencing were discussed. He demonstrated how to perform geo-statistical analysis and Modelling using SagaGis. The participants had hands on session with GIS tool and they were able to create reference points in maps.
Session 7 :
The various positioning techniques were discussed by Mr.KarthickNanmaran, Assistant Professor, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), Chennai. He also explained how to integrate sensor data via kalman filter to improve navigation availability with a hands on session.
Finally, the valedictory ceremony was convened by Dr.B.Amutha, Professor and HOD, Department of CSE, Kattankulathur. She gave away the certificates to the participants. We also collected the feedback from the participants.
