Venue : Dr. T.P.Ganesan Auditorium

Welcoming the freshers has become a common trait in almost all the colleges now-a-days, but SRM University stands distinct from its counter parts and has become a trendsetter for celebrating the Freshers Party. Freshers found their immense gratification for landing in SRM University and making it as their academic destination in the Freshers Celebration titled, “SHRU”. The title itself roars the meaning as, “Beginning”. August 5th, 2017, witnessed the freshers celebration starting from the Marathon to various events throughout the day. The young talents participated enthusiastically in the marathon though it was organized at the dawn.

After that, the cultural activities for the day took part at T.P.Ganesan Auditorium from 10 a.m in the morning. Followed by the prayer song, The Director (Students Affairs), began the bench marking the event by lighting the lamp accompanied by two student representatives. Then the entire auditorium was left for the young minds to enjoy and entice with events that were to be followed. The benevolent seniors took in charge of the programs and made sure that their juniors never left any joy unturned.

The event began with the classical dance by the first year student and her grace filled dance conquered everyone’s attention. As one of the anchors mentioned, “The program organized for the Freshers by Freshers”. Participants, as well as the audience, were only the juniors who were at their peak of entertainment mood and were relishing the treat. The auditorium was filled with applauds, laughter and the students were really having a gala time. Various competitions like vocal, drama, dance and fashion shows were organized as a part of the program and the renowned jury was also set up to evaluate the students’ performance. At the break of the twilight the event named Mr& Ms.Fresher was arranged and the best of better pupils who showcased their special talents were selected. And as freshers surprise treat a new Bollywood movie was also telecasted for the freshers. With this wonderful delicacies, the freshers were given a warm welcome to become a part of the SRM University.

Energy is meant to empower! But instead, its generation has lead to climate change, pollution, wildlife loss, natural resource depletion, rising sea levels and what not. We have created a dent. Now, it is up to us to fix it. SRM Indian Energy Conference is a platform fully dedicated to discuss, debate and analyze energy and its future across the seven seas. Instead of creating awareness, we take a step further and develop a panel where we look into major energy issues around the globe and create solutions that might generate a successful impact. Set in an MUN model, SRM IEC aims at providing you a chance to represent countries, organizations or individuals at a conference simulating international and national level discussions and in turn work on crucial issues and solutions in energy and its relevant sectors. SRM Indian Energy Conference is going to be organized for the second time on the 12th -13th August 2017 in SRM.

1. The committee for Energy protocols: Subsidized cost for Green Energy
2. The committee for persistent past: The Kuwait Oil Spill

SRM Eco Run

Organised by Aruush team, SRM University

'SRM Eco Run'

Grasping the need for living in a pristine environment at the grass root level, SRM organized an eco run on the morning of the 71st Independence Day of India to make people aware about the importance of environment conservation. With the motto of 'Go Clean, Go green', the Aaruush team from SRM University organized the 5km long run as an attempt to break the Limca Book of Records for the "Biggest Eco Run" and observed around 1181 registrations. In order to encourage the crowd to contribute towards a clean and green environment, the Bring Your Own Bottle(BYOB) Campaign was also implemented in order to reduce plastic water bottle usage to minimal. This campaign ensured that no packaged plastic bottles were provided to the participants, hence spreading the motto. As part of the eco run the registered participants were also encouraged to sign a petition for "Switch to 100% Renewable Energy" with the aim to move towards an eco-friendly environment. The event noticed participation from not just the students but also from many faculty members of the University.
The event started at around 6 am with the officials commencing the run followed by the students. The 5km track of the race was marked with several direction boards for the crowd and had multiple water desks with necessary first aid kits for emergency purposes. RedBull and Khadims had partnered with the event and were publicised in various collaterals. With SRM Eco Run being one of the major events of the Aaruush team, the team is 30 days away from organizing the eleventh edition of their  National Level Techno-Management fest  Aaruush. Well known for the events covering the technical and managerial aspects, Aaruush has been growing with each passing year.

Fourth National Workshop on Advances in Positioning, Navigation and Communication

Start: 17-08-2017
End: 18-08-2017

TheFourth national workshop on Advances in Positioning, Navigation and Communication was organized by Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Kattankulathur, SRM University during August 17-18, 2017. The workshop was conducted in association with IET, The Institution of Engineering and Technology and IEEE SRM University Student chapter. The two-day workshop was planned with seven technical sessions delivered by eminent academicians and industry personnel from various institutes. A total of forty-seven participants registered for the workshop including faculty members and student community.

About the workshop:

Localization is touching every aspect of our everyday life. Location-based services are featured in widely used applications in cellular communication- emergency services, weather forecast delivery, social networking, targeted advertising, navigation, are just a few. Not only cellular- positioning/location technologies are dominant in virtually all wireless networks deployments for a myriad of commercial, industrial, governmental and military uses. Although mobile position aware systems, combined with modern wireless technologies are becoming increasingly present in daily life, there are still technological obstacles and challenges in finding accurate location and tracking information. This workshop was devoted to recent advances in positioning, navigation and communications, as well as current state of the art in techniques and systems.

Session 1:

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.S.R.Ramanan, Director (Retd.), Indian Meteorological Division, Chennai. He gave a talk on the topic Cyclone Forecasting in the Indian Subcontinent and disaster management. We had an interactive session with the participants discussing various experiences in his career as a meteorologist. He shared his experience during his last year of work when floods drowned Chennai.

Session 2:

Modernization of GNSS was covered by Dr Sridevi Jade, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modeling & Computer Simulation, Bengaluru, India.GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System and is the standard generic term for satellite navigation systems that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. The various applications behind GNSS for navigation were discussed by Dr Sridevi Jade. She shared her experience in CSIR fourth paradigm institute and gave insight for setting up labs in our premises.

Session 3:

The third session started with a brief introduction about Shri.K.V.S.Bhaskar, Project Director, Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems, Indian Space Research Organization, Bengaluru, India. He gave an in-depth talk about the Space Craft Configuration and design for navigational satellites. He also encouraged the participants to take up internships and visit ISRO in order to grab practical knowledge on Satellite navigation systems.

Session 4:

Mr. Ragav Ramachandran, Research Scholar, Laboratory for Waves & Complex Media, University of Le Havre, France gave a talk on Planetary& Deep Space Communication Techniques. The demands placed on deep space communications systems are continuously increasing. Without a consistently effective and efficient communications system, a successful mission would be impossible.

Session 5&6:

The second day began with the talk on the importance of Georeferencing by Mr.VigneshMurugesan, Research Scholar, Department of Sociology, Indian Institute of Technology,Indore. TheKalmanus societal applications behind Geo referencing were discussed. He demonstrated how to perform geo-statistical analysis and Modelling using SagaGis. The participants had hands on session with GIS tool and they were able to create reference points in maps.

Session 7 :

The various positioning techniques were discussed by Mr.KarthickNanmaran, Assistant Professor, SRM University,  Chennai. He also explained how to integrate sensor data via kalman filter to improve navigation availability with a hands on session.

Finally, the valedictory ceremony was convened by Dr.B.Amutha, Professor and HOD, Department of CSE, Kattankulathur. She gave away the certificates to the participants. We also collected the feedback from the participants.
