Report on “Workshop on Applications and Challenges for Biometrics Technology in IoT Environment
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a two-day Workshop on “Applications and Challenges for Biometrics Technology in IoT Environment” on 30th August and 31st August 2018, in association with IET Student Chapter. This workshop has provided a platform for researches and academicians to discuss and exchange ideas on the various topics such as secure IoT based biometric sensor, Arduino Biometric Sensor, color identification, object tracking etc.
The workshop on Image processing and Biometrics with IoT was conducted as parallel sessions. Both the parallel sessions had four sessions spread over two days with Expert Lectures, Hands-on experience, and interactive discussions. Participants were made to register through a registration link. Totally 47 people registered for the workshop. Among them 27 registered for Image processing and 20 registered for Biometrics with IoT. Many participants from other colleges registered and attended the workshop. All of them actively participated in the workshop.
Experts came from Skyfi labs, Bangalore. They had good experience in the field of IoT, Image Processing, and Object Tracking and Biometric technology. Mr. Aditya Chund/ Engineer, Co-Founder, and CTO of SkyFi labs, Bangalore handled the sessions on Image Processing. Participants were trained in Open CV and python to identify the objects and track it.
Mr. Karthy.T, Engineer, SkyFi labs, Bangalore, handled the session on Biometrics with IoT. The participants were given Arduino, Fingerprint Scanner, LED display board and breadboard with connecting wires to have hands-on experience in biometric authentication.
The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Dr. S.S.Sridhar, Professor & Head, CSE. Then, the chief guests were introduced by the convener of the workshop, Dr. Annapurani.K, Associate Professor, CSE, the one who planned and initiated and took all efforts to organize this workshop in a smoother way. The chief guest, Mr.T.Karthy in his address to the gathering, pointed out that the smart IoT techniques can be applied to the variety of problems such as surveillance, home automation and also in almost all real-world problems. The chief guest, Mr. Aditya Chundy in his address to the gathering pointed out that the importance of python language in image processing and its applications.
Summary of the lectures delivered on Day 1 (30.08.2018)
The first lecture titled “Fingerprint scanner in Biometric access system” was delivered by Mr.T.Karthy. In his inspiring speech on Introduction to IoT and biometrics, he pointed out the objective of IoT and to transform the inputs into meaningful outputs. Then, he described about various biometric sensors and its features. He explained how the Arduino can be utilized in smart IoT. Then he elaborated the microprocessor, microcontroller and embedded system with an example.He also pointed out many application areas of biometric sensors. He divided the participants into 6 groups with maximum 4 in a group. The Biometric kit was given to each group.
He discussed about the ongoing projects and courses associated with the projects like

He gave a group task to different groups about formulating a smart bag, smart chair, smart classroom, smart AC on the basics of IoT and the biometric sensor. Definitely, his lecture would have sharpened all the participants’ minds. With the Arduino kit and sensor, he showed the way to work on it. He addressed that each of the smart technologies and intelligent on its own. He stated that we need to go for combining various biometric sensors models to minimize our effort and to maximize gain. Finally, he ended up with how to do research. There is no doubt that the participants would have conceived his guidelines to do research.
The first session on image processing was initiated by Mr.Aditya Chund. He addressed the gathering with the objective and real-time challenges of image processing. He also discussed the need of python packages for implementing the projects related to computer vision, image processing etc. He explained the procedure to install python2.7 with all the necessary packages. He taught the basic commands related to image processing using python. He discussed about the various Gaussian filters, threshold etc, with respect to python language.
He explained about the usage of machine learning algorithm in face recognition systems. It was a mind-blowing session. He illustrated many image processing examples.
Summary of lectures on Day 2 (31.08.18)
Biometric with IoT:
The session was continued by Mr.T.Karthy with a bouquet, and he presented on the topic “Biometric Trends in IoT”. He narrated about topics such as
Cloud-based biometric solutions.
Mobile biometric technology
The session was completely hands-on. At the end, the participants were really happy after exploring the kit and real-time implementation of Biometric with IoT.
The session was continued by Mr.Adithya Chund. He showed the implementation of color detection of a ball using python, step by step. Also, he showed how to track the object using a ball.
During the valedictory function, the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. C. Malathy, Professor, Convener (WACBIoT), and the one who did enormous work to organize this workshop.
Dr.S.S.Sridhar, Professor, distributed the certificates to all the participants of the workshop. The valedictory function ended up with the presentation of memento to the experts by Dr.Annapurani.K and Dr.G.Niranjana, Associate Professor CSE department, SRM Institute of Science and Technology.
