About the department

 

Department of Automobile Engineering
Modern automotive industries need experts in vehicle design and manufacture. With this in mind, the Department of Automobile Engineering was established in 2004 to train the students in the area of automobile engineering. Since Chennai is the automobile hub of India, with Ford, Hyundai, BMW, Ashok Leyland and others, this course gains significance for those who are passionate about automobiles.

Academics

Undergraduate
The objective of this B. Tech program in Automobile Engineering is to give students a broad exposure in the design, development and testing of automobiles. Furthermore, the program trains them to meet the technological challenges and diverse needs of the industry and society in various areas of automobile engineering and equips them to excel in a truly competitive industry.

Postgraduate
The MAS (Master of Automotive System) program has been introduced in collaboration with the HAN University of Applied Science, Netherlands. This course provides students with a good theoretical base, sound practical techniques and skills. It prepares them for specific development and design positions, meeting national and international requirements.

Faculty & research
The department has a team of highly qualified, dedicated and experienced teachers. They specialize in IC Engines, Alternative, Fuels, Automotive Technology, Automotive Design, Production, Thermal & Electric Vehicles. Research activities are in progress in the areas of alternative fuels, Engine systems, vehicle dynamics and new trends in engine design

Major Events and Achievement
The department conducts National level workshops and Guest lecturers from top most industry peoples. Automobile Engineers association (AEA) is a forum for students to develop their professional skills conducting events like Team Conrods (BAJA SAEINDIA), Team 4ZE, The Fasteners, Camber Racing (SUPRA SAEINDIA), Team Infieon, SRM WiRL. Students are also encouraged to take part in awareness campaigns that have social relevant. Under the semester abroad program, three students have been sent to HAN University of applied science, Netherlands.

Industrial Collaborations
The department maintains MoU with 1) SRMU – BOSCH Joint Certification Training Centre 2) Sarada Motors India Pvt Ltd.

Students get opportunity to serve many top-notch Automobile Companies & IT companies like Mahindra & Mahindra, Johneere, Hyundai, Ashok Leyland, Renault Nissan, Royal Enfield, Ford India, Greaves Cotton Ltd, Puri Crawford, Keane India Ltd., Taegutec India, Rico Auto, Sarada Motors, Cholorisk services, General Motors, Oracle, TCS, CTS, Infosys, Accenture, Natrip, L&T Infotech, Wipro Ltd,Musigma, I-Gate Patni & Cape Gemini India.
With the opening up of R& D and manufacturing plants by global players in various parts of the country and the increase in demand for automotive experts in the domestic and international markets, graduates of automobile engineering have a bright future ahead.

  • A national level student symposium "Communication Spectrum - 2009 (COMSPEC-'09)" organized by Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology held during 19th and 20th February 2009
  • A national level open robotics challenge "Robolympix 2K9" organized by SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) held during 11th and 12th April 2009
  • A national level student technical fest "Aaruush '09" organized by SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), held during 09th to 12th September 2009
  • A national level workshop on "Software Engineering" organized by Department of Computer Science Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology held during 11th & 12th December 2009
