The DST- Inspire Science Camp 2018

“The basic things for science are the human effort, understanding the nature and questioning it”, said Mr. S. Balachander, Director of Area Cyclone Warning and Regional Meteorological Centre in his inaugural address at Inspire Science Camp 2018. He broadly introduced about the various technologies involved in weather forecasting, and how logical thinking and understanding is a solution to any scientific problem and also stressed on how important it is to transform an idea from a laboratory into a user-friendly, easily accessible application to the general public. His speech was highly informative and thought provoking.

The Guest of Honour, Dr.J. Daniel Chellapa, Senior Scientist, Technical Coordination Wing, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre addressed the students with a set of questions. He asked, “Why is India having debts all over the world?” How many home appliances are made in India?” .These questions triggered the curiosity of the students to know the answers. He also spoke about the need of “Make in India” and how students have to prepare themselves for a better nation. He concluded with an endnote saying, “You are making India”. He inspired the students within few minutes of his speech.

‘Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research’ (INSPIRE) is an innovative science camp organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India with the motive of gathering young talents and inculcating the applications of advanced science and technology through interactive lectures and experimental workshops.

The DST Science Camp 2k18 had a fabulous start, with the respected dignitaries lighting up the traditional kuthuvilakku and starting the function. Dr. John Thiruvadigal, Convener, and Dean of Science, SRM IST addressed the energetic young crowd with a warm welcome speech. He said, “SRM IST has produced 7 Nobel laureates in the field of science and technology”. He also mentioned about the Nanosatellite SRMSAT, which has been developed by the department with the collaboration of ISRO.

The Convener, Dr.T.P.Ganesan, Pro Vice-Chancellor, SRM IST delivered the welcome address. He amazed the students with his minuscule definition about research by quoting it as “Research is nothing but the search of truth while science is an approximation of truth”. He mentioned about the significance of the term “Innovation” that is gaining rapid importance prior to discovery and invention. The Vice-chancellor also talked about the four important qualities of a researcher, which are curiosity, inquisitive nature, sustained efforts and hard work. His speech was an eye-opener for the young minds.

The event proceeded with the launch of “Collection of R.Feynman Lectures CD”, which was released by the respected dignitaries. Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr.T.P.Ganesan gave away the mementos to the guests of honor as a token of gratitude.

The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr.C.Preferencial Kala, Interim HOD of the Department of Physics and Nanotechnology, SRM IST.
