International Conference on Media and Visual Literacy

The 1st International Conference on Media and Visual Literacy had an invigorating start on April 1, 2016 at Mini Hall I, Dr.T.P.Ganesan Auditorium. The main theme of the conference was on “Exploring Skills and Developments amongst Youth”.

The dignitaries present on the occasion were as follows;
Prof.Dr.Mohammed Zin Nordin, Chief Guest for the event.
Dr.C.Pitchandi, SRM Arts & Science College.
Dr.Rajesh Prabhakaran, H.O.D, Department of Visual Communication.
Mr.J.Jothikumar, Associate Dean , Faculty of Science & Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University).

In the ‘Presidential Address’ Mr.Jothikumar gave a warm welcome to the Chief Guest Dr.Mohammed Zin Nordin. He emphasized the varied types of communication such as videos, magazines, newspapers etc. He stated that “A Good Picture is Equal to a 1000 Words”. He encouraged students to learn by doing.  He hoped the conference would help the students understand the aspects of media that influence consumer behaviour, ethical, legal issues involved in media etc.

The Special Address was delivered by Dr.C.Pitchandi. He said that he was very happy about the relevancy of the topic being discussed at the conference. He believes that media literacy is important since both scholars and governments are affected by media. He stated that media persons are both ‘Information Givers’ and ‘Public Opinion Moulders’. He also spoke extensively about the impact of technology on communication. He felt that new media platforms such as ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ have enabled seamless citizen journalism.  He went on to add that future researchers and students should focus on the ‘Social, Political and Economic’ effects of visual media.

Dr.Mohammed Zin Nordin gave the ‘Key Note Address’. He stated that the “Ability to read and write is beautiful”. He has conducted studies on children in the age of digital abundance. He highlighted that advertisements influences a lot of people, especially young kids. He said that ‘Media Literacy’ is the new literacy challenge and is crucial for citizenship roles. He emphasized that media literacy must be implemented from the ground and felt that media literacy is quite prevalent in schools in Tamil Nadu, India. He stated that the European Union (E.U) has better media literacy policies. First and foremost the government should support communication and literacy related policies. He stated that this can be achieved through a lobby group. This group can help the government see the long-term goals of such policies. Civil participation should be encouraged; people must be made self-aware of the benefits of media literacy. He felt media companies and communication organisations have a responsibility towards imparting media literacy, he suggested they could create media related interactive activities that enabled public to become self-ware of media literacy. Similarly he said schools should do their part and make media literacy a part of their curriculum. Efforts discussed above, if implemented would be a great boon for the future generations and would help them to lead more productive lives, he went on to add.

The 2 day event included a variety of interactive sessions, guest lectures and interesting activities such as ‘Visual Literacy and Education’, ‘Digital Literacy’, ‘New Media/Information and Communication Technology (ICT)’, ‘Media & Social Issues’, ‘Health & Visual Literacy’, ‘Visual Aesthetics’ etc.
