Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Screening

Retinopathy of Prematurity is a disease of the eye affecting prematurely-born babies generally having received intensive neonatal care, in which oxygen therapy is often used and advantageous. It is thought to be caused by disorganized growth of retinal blood vessels which may result in scarring and retinal detachment.
ROP can be mild and may resolve spontaneously, but it may lead to blindness in serious cases. As such, all preterm babies are at risk for ROP, and very low birth weight is an additional risk factor. Both oxygen toxicity and relative hypoxia can contribute to the development of ROP.
A dedicated programme of screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity is being conducted in the Department by our Vitreo-retina specialists, in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics.

Orbit Oculoplasty, Ocular Oncology & Ocular Trauma

Orbit is the bony cavity enclosing the eye. The orbit can be the seat of tumors that cause protrusion of the eyeball (proptosis). The lacrimal system drains tears into the nose and could be the site of chronic infection (dacryocystitis). Naso lacrimal duct obstructions both congenital and acquired are routinely treated by us, with probing, external/ endonasal dacryocysto rhinostomy, Oculoplasty (or) Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery deals with the management of diseases and abnormalities of the orbit, eyelids and the lacrimal system. Drooping of the upper eyelid (ptosis) is a common problem dealt by this Department. If the lid droop is very severe especially in young children, it can even lead to lazy eye (amblyopia). Hence correction of the condition is essential for functional and cosmetic improvement.
Ocular Oncology treatment is routinely provided by this department for advanced types of ocular malignancies like skin cancers, optic nerve tumours, etc.
These services are routinely being offered in collaboration with the Department of Plastic Surgery, the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and the Department of Neurosurgery

The Uvea is the middle layer of the eyeball; and is responsible for the 'housekeeping' of the eye. It carries the blood vessels, nerves, pigment cells and immune cells. It extends from the front to the back of the eye and at different parts is called differently. In the front is the Iris and anterior part of the ciliary body (anterior uvea), in the middle is the posterior part of the ciliary body (pars plana) (intermediate uvea) and posteriorly it is called the choroid.
We offer the latest investigative and treatment modalities of this disorder.
