The Software Engineering Association finds pride in having organized a South Zone Level coding and hackathon “Code Enigma v2.0” from 31st March 2017 to 1st April 2017.

At its infant stage Code Enigma v1.0 was organized last year by the Software Engineering Association for the students of Department of Software Engineering. The competition grew from an inter-departmental event to a South Zone level competition and Code enigma v2.0 was organized for students across the 5 states of South India. The registration for event began on the association website on 14th March 2017.

Round 1:  Pseudo Code was on online round, held on the Hacker Earth portal. This round was to be taken by each individual participant, and the final result of each team was an average of the score of all the members. About 300+ participants registered for Code Enigma v2.0 of which 160 members were filtered and promoted to second round.

Round 2: Bits Please was held on 31st March 2017 at SRM, Kattankulathur campus. This was a team event where the members wracked their brains together to ensure that the answer given by them was the best that they could do. Amongst the 160 participants 60+ were awarded merit and were put through to the final round i.e. hackathon.

Round 3: Hackathon was a rigorous 20 hour round held from 31st march, 6:30pm till 1st April, and 2:30 pm. As most hackathon go, the teams were given the task to build a prototype on the theme “Digital India. The final round was judged by experiences and accomplished personalities of the technical conundrum, Mr. Shishir Guduri, Mr. ChithiraiSelvan Shanmugam and Mr. Srinivas Rao.

The winners were awarded with cash prizes worth Rs. 30,000.  The event ended with all the participants having gone through a series of evaluation to prove themselves as better amongst the others and learn from this and add to their skills.

As part of the memorandum of understanding with Partners Medical International USA a special workshop on medical education was organised on August 2015 and another on August 2016. During these two workshops the Harvard University pattern of teaching was taught to 50 faculties of SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre. There was special emphasis on flipped class room module. In this pattern teaching material will be given three days prior to the class, students will learn and come and then they will be given assignments after which they will have group discussion and the students will answer.

Here every student will be involved in the discussion and teachers are facilitators. Student involvement will be more. The feedback by students was quite good. This is the Harvard pattern of study. We are planning to do away with didactic lectures. Besides as in Boston and Harvard our SRM Medical College has introduced early clinical exposure. Right from the first year the medical students are made to see patient. So that they will understand how important the first year's subjects Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry in the diagnosis and management of diseases. SRM Medical College has introduced this for the first time when compared to other medical colleges.

A seven member faculty team had visited Boston from 2nd May to 5th May 2016 to study the advances in medical education in Harvard University. Accordingly foundation course and early clinical exposure was introduced for the first year MBBS students (2016-2017) and is going successfully.

As part of the long term goal 30 flipped class room modules and integrated teaching modules are created. Also virtual teaching content and competency based curriculum is being planned. The workshop organised on 3rd, 4th & 5th of April 2017 will emphasise how to formulate competency based curriculum, virtual teaching content and problem based learning. And setting up OSCE station. In competency based curriculum one teachers how to be a good clinician, a leader of health care team, a good communicator with patient and ethics in medical profession. Partners medical international under the able guidance Dr.Thomas Aretz and Dr.Lynn are planning to organise one more workshop in modern methods of medical education in July 2016.

For the present workshop 50 faculties from SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Chennai Medical College Trichy and SIMS participated. Prof. P.Thangaraju Pro Vice Chancellor (Medical) inaugurated the workshop and Dean (Medical) welcomed the gathering.

“Designing a Software is both a process and a model. The design process is a sequence of steps that enables the designer to describe all aspects of the software for building. Creative skill, past experience, a sense of what makes "good" software, and an overall commitment to quality are examples of critical success factors for a competent design.”

Department of Software Engineering believes that education is more than classroom learning. It’s very important for the students to understand real world complexities more intuitively, interact with real world objects. With this motto, we organized a contest “Design with UML”, for the students of “School of Computing” on 7th April 10, 2017.

The main objective of the contest was to analyze and evaluate the student design and modeling skills when given a real time problem and their teamwork capabilities. Hence the case studies were modelled by the Corporate Members Ms. Hema G, Manager, Learning and Development and Mr. Karthikeyan Ramanathan, Manager, Learning and Development from Capgemini Technology Services, Chennai who also was the jury to evaluate the best design projects.
