Lohri celebrations are always filled with fun and frolic in the state of Punjab, and the Directorate of Student Affairs successfully recreated the same atmosphere and environment in SRM’s Auditorium Grounds on the 2nd of February.
The proceedings began around 6 PM, as the students gathered to celebrate the festival with vigor.

The celebration started with the traditional bonfire attracting the attention of the people, who huddled around it to begin the festivities. A few traditional rituals customary in the state of Punjab were carried out, and once the bonfire practices were finished, the singing began to keep the audience entertained. Typical Punjabi songs were sung, with a few folk songs added into the mix to celebrate the spirit of the Lohri festival.

The singing instilled a need to dance in the students, and some music was played for them to dance around and enjoy the happiness involved in the celebration of Lohri. All the students came dressed in traditional attire, as the entire celebration looked very uniform, making for some really good pictures of the festival.

The event wrapped up around 8:30 PM and the music and dancing eventually came to a halt. Although the bonfire continuously went down, the fire set into the hearts of the participants continues to glow bright and steady. Expectations for more festival celebrations was the topic of conversation as the students were seen leaving for their homes and hostels.

Butterflies'18

Start: 03-02-2018

Organized by Directorate of Student Affairs, SRM Institute of Science and Technology

Butterflies is an annual event organized by the Social Club of SRM, aimed at providing the exposure of university life and infrastructure to the children from schools around SRM. This is usually done by conducting a vast number of activities on campus, ranging from literary to sports events. Held on the 3 rd of February, the event was organized in the Dental Grounds, Tech Park, and Medical Auditorium from 8 AM to 4:30 PM.

The 9th edition of Butterflies saw the participation of 700 students from 12 schools, hailing from nearby areas and the Kancheepuram district. 7 events were held under the sports domain with competitions like races, relays, long jumps and sack races for both boys and girls. While these events progressed in the Dental Grounds, the Tech Park classrooms saw a good number of literary events happening side by side. The essay competition had topics related to the environment, agriculture and homeopathy, while the elocution contest had food wastage and India’s future as the topics of speech. Budding artists were given the color drawing and pencil drawing contests, with general topics on home, classrooms, and earth, or allowed to choose a topic of their own.

A quiz was also set up for the kids, testing them with general knowledge questions for the future. Two very unique events were also held during Butterflies, which attracted the attention of the participants. The first one is a memory game, a simple test of retaining words from a pool of 50. The latter is a special talents contest, allowing students to show off any talents of theirs in a group of two. Apart from these two, another competition which garnered a lot of interest was the group dance in the cultural domain, held in the Medical Auditorium. With a maximum of 8 people allowed to participate in the dance, the event was viewed and enjoyed by the huge number of students present at the auditorium to witness the showdown. Group dance concluded with the Nandhivaram School clinching the first position, as Kattankulathur School came a close second.

The Valedictory function was graced by the presence of Tamil actor and director Mr. Ramakrishnan, who served as the chief guest for the occasion. He was accompanied by Mr. Ravindran (Student Counsellor), Anush Ramachandran (Cultural Secretary, DSA) and Priyadarshan (Convener, Social Club). The prizes were distributed and the overall winners were the students of Thirukkatchur School, with the runner-up position taken by the Nandhivaram Girls School. Butterflies was an event thoroughly enjoyed by all, as the students left with great interests and ambitions to pursue higher studies in the future as well. Alankrith Krishnan Team V.A.U.L.T

A Technical Talk on Intro to Gamedev and XR

Start: 05-02-2018

Orgainsed By: Department of Computer Science Engineering

In Association With:  ACM Students Chapter.

Venue: SRMIST Kattankulathur Campus

"Intro to Gamedev and XR" is a free to attend Technical Talk, conducted by ' Next Tech Lab' members in association with Unity and ACM Students Chapter & ACM-W Chennai Chapter, SRMIST-Kattankulathur Campus on 5th February, 2018 . The event is arranged for people who are curious about game development and emerging technologies such as Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, and Virtual Reality but have little to no experience. With industries rapidly adopting extended reality technologies and as consumers spend more time and money in gaming, game developers are in high demand in the industry right now and this demand is only expected to increase in future. In this technical session, we introduce people to Unity game engine and provide guidelines that might help them convert their ideas into video games. We would also show the process to make their first Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality applications and explore various use cases pertaining to XR. At the end of the talk, the audience can expect to have a better sense of the game development industry and the Extended Reality industry and enough knowledge to pick up game dev or XR dev on their own.
