Environment Day Celebration 2018

Date: May 30 - June 05, 2018

A team of faculty members across various disciplines Research, Public Health, Engineering and Technology, Student Affairs have collaborated together to have a week long celebrations for the forthcoming event i.e. Environment Day, which falls on June 5th.

Day- 1 Activity Report

Today (May 30, 2018), being the first day, A group of 50 members have flocked together at the University Library.

As a mini walkathon, we marched around the campus along with an industry expert, who provided a significant enlightenment on 'Smart bins'. At Java Green, we had an insightful interaction with the vendors to create awareness about the importance of avoiding Plastics. To our astonishment, Vendors have also consented to the significance of avoiding plastics.

Apart from these, House-keeping team along with gloves & bags were also accompanied us. Segregation of waste was carried out by them by reiterating its importance. Indeed, it was quite good for everyone to self-infuse some knowledge on the various types of cleaning. In the end, the team flocked together by sealing the plan for the next few days, by bringing Day-1 activity to a conclusive & crispy end. We firmly believe that post this ‘Mini-walkathon’, SRMIST would remain as a plastic free campus by casting constant awareness among teachers, students, vendors & others. The long term objective would be 'Avoiding plastics should become a way of life', thereby leaving the world, a safe abode for our future generations. In the future, the term ‘Plastic’ should be expunged from the dictionary.

Day- 2 Activity Report

In continuance of our plan, a buoyant team of 35 members left for SRM Rural Health Centre, located at Mamandoor. We arranged around 40 saplings and planted them in and around the campus. Indeed, it was an elated and a memorable experience. Everyone around there had a productive & delightful time.

We would like to extend our profound thanks to all the following team members, who made it possible.

  • Transportation team, who had provided a van and a small lorry.
  • Horticulture team, who had provided the saplings and also accompanied us all along by providing an amiable guidance.
  • Hostel team, who had offered a yummy lunch in a short notice.
  • Maintenance team, who had provided an overall coordination & planting.

Last, but not the least, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the teams from various discipline, who had convened together and materialized this Day-2 event as an enchanting one.

In addition to this, we would also laud the excellent hospitality of the Doctor and Staff at our Mamandoor facility.

We should not rest with this and have to incessantly continue in our pursuit of making our environment a more greener one!

Day- 3 Activity Report

Every drop of water goes to make the mighty ocean. Yes, the mighty ocean that we take for granted may no longer be the same in the days to come. The theme for this year's World Environment Day is 'Beat Plastic pollution’. It has been predicted that in the years to come there would be more plastic in the ocean than fish!!

The men are so busy with technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, etc that they have had its fair share of advantage but we have failed to realize the enormity of the man-made harm to the environment due to excessive use of plastics. The earth's surface and the ocean beds are being clogged. A danger, that we are failing to acknowledge and therefore it is very important to take relevant measures at the earliest. Since 1974 United Nations has been creating awareness by observing June 5th as World Environment Day.

This year India is the host and so, we have a major responsibility to stand as a role model by working towards a more sustained and safe environment. SRM as an institution has pledged to give its very best in becoming a responsible and environmentally conscious institution. On June 3rd a campaign was organized in Besant Nagar Beach which brought together the Vice-Chancellor of the Institute to staff members, researchers and a team of 50 students as members to 'start a change '.

The team showed that everyone has a responsibility towards the environment. The members were involved in educating vendors on alternates to plastics, creating awareness among children and the public and that, small efforts sustained over time can produce significant results. Thus, SRM is set on its journey towards sustaining a safe environment for the future generations.
