Department of Mathematics

About the Department

Mathematics crosses boundaries in a way no other technical subject can. Mathematics is an integral part of the study of engineering regardless of which branch of engineering is chosen.  The department of Mathematics pursues the philosophy of "carrying out education and research on Mathematics that serves as the foundation for various sciences, as well as development of science and society”.The Department has a large vibrant intellectual community. The 39 academic faculty members in the department are activity involved in research, teaching- learning and public outreach. The Department has a cohesive group of faculty members in the fields of Analysis, Fluid Dynamics, Fuzzy set theory, Graph theory, Differential Equations and are actively engaged in wide-ranging areas of research in Mathematics and allied subjects. The department offers Ph.D programme and has two recognized Ph.D. supervisors.  5 faculty members have completed Ph. D and 19 are pursuing. The faculty members have published 125 papers in Scopus indexed journals in the last 5 years.  They are keeping their knowledge updated by attending and conducting relevant conferences, seminars and workshops. Department has organized National Conference on “Fuzzy set theory and its applications” in 2017 which is funded by BRNS Mumbai. Department has been organizing National level workshops every year, for the faculty members in various research fields. The Mathematics department takes pride in careful personal mentoring. The faculty members are dedicated to teaching and create a first class learning environment in the class room. The students are groomed academically, under careful personal monitoring by the faculty members. The mathematical association “FRACTAL’ conducts guest lectures, seminars, competitions periodically thereby encouraging the students to enhance their Mathematical skills and talents. To understand the applications of Mathematics in engineering; every semester, the Department has been organizing an interdisciplinary Mathematical Modeling Competition based on Engineering Applications for the students.

Vision of the Department

The Department's vision is to create an integrated teaching, research and outreach unit to enhance the visibility, linkages and impact of Mathematics. Department of Mathematics strives to be internationally recognized for academic excellence through the depth of its teaching and research, and to be locally relevant through its role in the development of the community it serves.

 Mission of the Department

The Department’s mission is to assist in integrating students into society by educating them in these fields and to build and foster an excellent faculty, which contributes to the development of Mathematics.
