Mathematics is applied in technology, engineering, media, medicine, finance, business, science, nature, sports etc. The Association of Mathematics “Fractal” of Department of Mathematics, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, conducted three days Math Fest“Mathema 2018” from 2nd April 2018 to 4th April 2018. The purpose of conducting Mathema - 2018 is to enhance the mathematical talents and skills of the students.
The inaugural function was held on 02.04.2018 at the Seminar Hall of Block III. The event began with the welcome address by Dr. Shakeela Sathish, Head of the Department, Mathematics. The office bearers of Mathema 2018 were officially declared by Dr. K. C. Shivakumar, Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Madras by handing over the Badges to them. Vice Principal (academics) felicitated the gathering.
Dr. K. C. Sivakumar in his inaugural address encouraged the students to participate in more number of such events which will sharpen their mathematical skills. Dean (E&T) in his Presidential address expressed his astonishment on astronomy which is a mathematical science for predictions. He said that mathematics is the basic for all the fabrications from nature where it finds its applications in architecture, music etc. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. S. Padmapriya, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics. Various competitions were conducted on the first day of the event.
The second day of the event commenced with a Guest talk by Mr. S. Rajesh, a budding entrepreneur. He is an HR consultant in ARMS (Academic Relationship Management System) and partner of Madras curry cup–well known south Indian restaurant. He shared the journey of his career growth into creating multiple ventures in multiple domains where he had also started House of Tutor in 2015, which won 3 best startup awards. After the guest talk by Mr. S. Rajesh, the competitive events of the second day were held which were organized by various startup companies run by our own students.
During 3 days various events like Count Me In, Aloha, Divide and Conquer, Dig-It, Dumbstruck, Play ON, Matheminch, Math πrates, Impatient Function were conducted. More than 300 students participated in the competitions. The final day of the event commenced with the participants who were qualified from the first two days, competing to win the prizes. Dean (Science and Humanities) was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory function. He said that Mathematics will nurture various aspects of creativity, critical thinking, the problem-solving ability of the students. He then distributed the prizes to the winners. Asim Saket Samad, Pratik Agarwal, Saurabh Jain of IT 3B won the first prize. Neha Nithanth, Jabedul Islam, Himanshu Mishra of I year Civil secured the second prize. Shubham Gupta, Shraman Das, Pranav Kulkarni of the First year CSE-B won the third prize. The office bearers of the association were honored with certificates of appreciation. The vote of thanks was proposed by the President of the association “Fractal”. The event was successful where students didn’t just solved problems but also analyzed how difficulty level of a problem can be minimized just with a slight change of perspective.
