Dr. Yuvaraj Sivalingam joined SRM Research Institute and Department of Nanotechnology in October 2016. Since then he is leading Laboratory for Sensors, Energy and Electronic Devices (Lab SEED). He received his M.Sc. in Physics in 2007 from Madurai Kamaraj University, India and in 2009 he received his M.Tech. in Sensor System Technology from VIT University (India), with a project entitled “Studies on the development of compositions for hydrogen sensing applications and their relevant instrumentation’. In 2008-2009 during his M.Tech. , he was a “project student” at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (India) under the supervision of Dr. V. Jayaraman. In-2009-2010, he started his research career in “Hydrothermal synthesis, fabrication and impedance analysis of 1D ZnO nanorods in the Laboratory of Nano Optoelectronic Materials at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan). He completed his Ph.D. in Sensorial and Learning System Engineering at University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (Italy), under the supervision of Prof. Corrado Di Natale, with a thesis entitled “Porphyrins coated ZnO nanostructures: preparation, characterization and chemical sensing applications”. In 2012, he was “visiting Ph.D. student” in the Laboratory of Advanced Electroactive Materials at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal (Canada), under the supervision of Prof. Clara Santato.
During that visit, he worked on “A study of interfacial processes between ZnO nanorods and ionic liquids for potential applications in photoelectrochemistry and ZnO nanorods based electrolyte gated field-effect photo-transistor”. In 2013, he was a “summer visiting Ph.D. student” in Flexible Organic Electronics Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Yamagata University, Yonezawa (Japan), under the supervision of Prof. Shizuo Tokito. During that visit, he worked on “Studies on the substrate and fabrication process influences in pentacene based organic thinfilm field effect transistors”. He continued research from 2013 on his Ph.D topic as a post doctoral researcher in sensors group, University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (Italy). In 2014, He was postdoctoral researcher in Soft Materials Group, WPI-Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University (Japan). He worked on “Frictional properties of polymer additives in lubricants on silica surfaces determined by surface forces and neutron reflectometry” with Prof. Kazue Kurihara. He continued the same research as a JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) postdoctoral fellow in Materials Physics Group, WPI-Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University (Japan).
His research is focused predominantly on i. Development of photoinduced chemical sensors for detection of VOCs and ii. Photoassisted biosensors for detection of biological entities, by a sensor device made up of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures coated with porphyrin molecules. His research has projected that presentation of light boosts adsorption of gas species by impelling electron donation from those adsorbed species when compared to dark environment. His ultimate research is to develop self-powered gas sensors for breath analysis. Recently, he is involved in the field of nanotribology. He has investigated time and temperature dependent structural and frictional properties of polymer additives in lubricant oils by surface forces and neutron reflectivity studies.
