Dr. K. Ananthanarayanan

M.Sc, Ph.D

Research Associate Professor


Born in Mumbai, India, I earned my B.Sc (Honors) degree and M.Sc degree in Chemistry from the Sri Sathya Sai University, India. I conducted my graduate studies at the National Centre for Ultrafast Process, India, earning a Ph.D. in Chemistry in the year 2007. My Ph.D. thesis was focused on the encapsulation of organic dyes and titanium dioxide semiconductor nanoparticles in mesoporous host materials and their characterisation, photophysics and photosensitisation studies. I then joined NanoCore, National University of Singapore where I worked as a Research Scientist starting work on development of novel mesoporous electrode materials for Dye-Sensitised Solar Cells (DSSCs) and Lithium Ion Batteries (LIBs). My work at NanoCore resulted in papers in various high impact factor journals including a cover page article in the journal Energy and Environmental Science. Since 2009, I held a position as Research Scientist at the Organic (Plastic) Solar Cells Cluster, Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) where I was responsible for the establishment of Organic solar cell laboratory. From 2013 till June 2016 I held a position as Deputy Head and Senior Research Scientist in the same organisation (SERIS). I joined  SRM Research Institute and Department of Chemistry as an Associate Professor in July 2016. Some of my key research contributions/highlights are as follows:

Established the organic solar cell laboratory at Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) in class 100K clean room with an area of 200 m2 and supervised graduate students.

  • Design and development of very-low-cost passivation/anti-reflective coating layers for high efficiency and highly stable silicon solar cells layers via novel liquid-based coatings by a variety of non-vacuum methods. (Product development for Industry) Cover page article in the journal Energy & Environmental Science with an impact factor of 25.42 and the work is cited as high impact research article in the journal Energy & Environmental Science (http://blogs.rsc.org/ee/2012/05/30/high-impact-battery-research-in-energy-environmental-science).
  • Project based on U.S. Patent No: US 8,968,931 B2: The National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore funded a one year project (S$ 243000) for the team to develop the material for powering electric vehicles in collaboration with E-One Moli (third largest battery manufacturer in Taiwan). This project involved the mass production of mesoporous TiO2 and its commercialization as an anode material for Lithium ion battery application.
  • Developed for the first time a novel “pseudo bi-layer” architecture for organic solar cells: Efficiency of the device improved by 40% when compared with traditional device architecture.
  • Design and synthesis of structurally well-defined mesoporous materials through soft-template methodology [U.S. Patent No: US 8,968,931 B2, U.S. Patent Application No. 13/817,929,Micro. Meso. Mater 2009, Energy &Environmental Science 2010 and Mater. Chem. Phys 2011] 

 My current research is focused on,

  • Development of novel device architecture for high efficiency organic solar cells
  • Development of novel transition metal oxides as inter facial layers for highly stable organic solar cells
  • Development of highly stable perovskite, organic/perovskite tandem solar cells. 

  • Flexible solar cells for low power electronics
  • Organic solar cells
  • Organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells (Perovskite solar cells)
  • Development of anti-reflection layers and passivation layers for silicon solar cells using low temperature solution process
