Dr. S. Anandhakumar


Research Assistant Professor

Dr. S. Anandhakumar joined as an Assistant Professor in Research Institute and associated with the Department of Physics and Nanotechnology at SRM University, since April 2012. He has got his Ph.D from Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore., and intensively worked on stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte capsules for encapsulation and release of macromolecules in response to environmental (pH, temperature, and ionic strength) and external (laser light and ultra sound) stimuli. He has expanded his research focus on designing functional polymers to synthesize LCST polymers for specific biomedical applications via cationic ring opening polymerization (CROP) by visiting University of Ghent, Belgium., as Visiting Assistant Professor. He has also worked as Visiting Assistant Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, and involved in developing various methodologies to modify the surfaces of screen printed and glass carbon electrodes for sensing of biomolecules and heavy metal ions.

His research focuses at the interface between materials science and biology to develop new approaches that helps solving complex problems in design of multi-functional, responsive materials for drug delivery, bioimaging and regenerative medicine. The goal is to use surface and colloid chemistry principles in developing novel bio-inspired synthetic routes that would lead to advanced biomaterials.

Drug Delivery. Research focuses on polyelectrolyte capsules and thin films for controlled and remotely activated drug delivery

  • Preparation of stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte capsules and thin films
  • Investigation of their permeability and stability
  • Study of various loading and release mechanisms to increase their encapsulation efficiency and release time
  • Remotely activated drug delivery of proteins and other pharmaceutical drugs using laser or ultrasound as triggers

Polymer Synthesis. Research focuses on poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazolines) (PAOx) synthesis for biomedical applications

  • PAOx synthesis by CROP polymerization
  • Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly of tannic acid (TA)/PAOx thin films and free standing carriers for biomedical applications

Sensing of Biomolecules. Research focuses on modification of glassy carbon and screen printed electrodes using thin films and nanoparticles for sensing of biomolecules

  • Modification of electrodes with NPs or polymeric thin films and complexes
  • Investigation of sensitivity, detection limit and reusability
  • Detection of array of biomolecules

Tissue engineering. Fabrication of polymeric scaffolds for tissue engineering applications
