SRM student to spend a semester at University of California,Berkeley

It was an unforgettable journey for 20 students from SRM Institute of Science and Technology and SRM University, AP- Amravati, when they set foot on the hallowed grounds of the 2nd most highly ranked university for Computer Science in the USA (US News & World Report), University of California, Berkeley.

Armed with full tuition scholarships from SRM, the students, with a deep passion to become entrepreneurs, will spend one semester at UC Berkeley to gain the skills, competencies, and experience needed to set up their own companies. The visits are part of a MoU between SRM and UC Berkeley that provides students world-class education experience with a focus on entrepreneurship.

Hear what Abhinav, the student leader of the group, has to say about his first-hand experience soon after classes began at UC Berkeley:

“It is a rare and excellent opportunity to be a student selected by SRM to spend a semester at the University of California, Berkeley. UC Berkeley is ranked among the foremost universities in the world and consists of well-established schools ranging from engineering to design, arts to law and many more.

Upon arrival, I was welcomed by the International Office with the rest of the students for lunch at The Men's Faculty Club. The place is a beautiful clubhouse and a marvel of architectural design, made of wood. The people here are very kind and warm to take questions and give us beneficial advice. Post lunch, we were given a tour of some of the famous spots on campus, including the Hearst Memorial building, the Jacobs Hall, and 308-foot Campanile. From the top of the Campanile, one gets a full and scenic view of Berkeley, the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay.

The campus consists of 32 libraries in total, which combine to make it among the largest library systems in the world, and I got to witness the famous and historic Doe Memorial Library, which goes multiple levels underground and preserves Mark Twain's literary works.

The students were warmed up to the Spring 2018 semester with a boot camp hosted by the Jacobs Institute of Design Innovation. In this intense, one week session, the students got to learn prototyping and fabrication techniques, such as laser-cutting and 3D-printing. In addition, the students also made robots performing a variety of origami techniques, as well as robots drawing interesting patterns on paper.

The boot camp kicked off the semester and New Year with a bang, and I hope to fully utilize the rest of my time at Berkeley to learn the best skills and educational practices”
