SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) held “Research Day” on 29th February, 2016. In this regard several research papers were presented in the Department of Civil Engineering on various topics. The best among them were awarded medals. Radhika Babu George and Umang Shah, belonging to 3rd year, B.tech, Civil Engineering Department, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), presented a paper titled “Efficiency of Fabric Dust Filter (Bag Filter) in Reducing Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) Level”. They worked under the guidance of Prof. J.S.Sudarsan, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University).
The paper focused on an important and major problem that not only India but also the world is facing today – ‘Air Pollution’. The paper targeted one of the major sources of air pollution namely ‘Textile Mills’. The study was done on ‘Dada Silk Mills’ in Gujarat. The main objective of the study is to create awareness about air pollution and foster technical understanding amongst textile units where different types of ‘Steam Boilers’ and ‘Thermic Fluid Heaters’ have been installed for generating steam, as well as to analyze the ‘Particulate Matter Reduction Efficiency’ in textile industry with the installation of the newly designed bag filters.
This paper was awarded the ‘Silver Medal’ by the esteemed panel of judges. It is an honor for the ‘Department of Civil Engineering’ to have received this medal. The panel of judges, in their feedback, emphasized bigger scope for this paper and encouraged further study on a larger scale under the guidance of the HOD of Civil Engineering.
